Developmental Edit
Does your manuscript have appropriate tension, pacing, character development, plot arc, and consistency of tense, point of view, and storyline? What are the gaps and how can they be addressed? Is it genre appropriate? Do you have specific concerns raised by your beta readers that you need help implementing?
My developmental edit is a thorough, high & low level redline of your manuscript with notes and suggested changes throughout in tracked changes, provided to you within an agreed upon timeline. You’ll also receive a 3+ page discussion of your manuscript’s strengths and areas for improvement.
Price:
- first 1000 words: FREE (this is to make sure you like my work and like working with me, and that I like working with you)
- next 79,000 words: $0.02/word (up to $1,580)
- 80,001 words or more: $0.02/word OR MORE depending on complexity. We’ll discuss this rate after completion of the first 1000 words, if we decide to continue working together.
Copyedit
Have you revised and revised your manuscript to the point where you feel good about the story, but need a second set of eyes to help polish the language? Are you looking for help with grammar, readability and flow?
My copyedit services include a line-by-line edit of your manuscript, with a focus on word choice, sentence structure, and chapter organization. This means I’ll pick out pesky repeated words and phrases, suggest re-wording of clunky sentences, and evaluate the flow of your chapter breaks.
Price:
- first 1000 words: FREE (this is to make sure you like my work and like working with me, and that I like working with you)
- next 79,000 words: $0.015/word (up to $1,185)
- 80,001 words or more: $0.015/word OR MORE depending on complexity. We’ll discuss this rate after completion of the first 1000 words, if we decide to continue working together.
Proofread
Is your manuscript polished and almost ready to publish? Has it gone through critique groups and beta readers and multiple revisions? Is it the very best writing you can produce?
Proofreading is a basic edit for spelling, grammar, and errors hard to catch when you’ve read your own work 1,000 times. This is so important that I’ve made it as affordable as possible.
Price: (for proofread or manuscript critique)
- first 1000 words: FREE (this is to make sure you like my work and like working with me, and that I like working with you)
- next 1 – 79,000 words: $250
- 80,001 words or more: $50/10,000 words, or as agreed between us. We’ll discuss this rate after completion of the first 1000 words, if we decide to continue working together
Choose this option at your own risk. After the first 1000 words (FREE to you), I may advise you that your manuscript is not ready for a proofread, in my opinion. In that case, you will have a few options:
- agree to disagree and amicably part ways (no hard feelings!)
- request that I read your full manuscript for the proofread price, then give you an honest critique, including a 3+ page discussion of your manuscript’s strengths and areas for improvement. No edits will be made in the document.
- request a developmental edit or copyedit instead, at listed prices
Why I won’t proofread a manuscript that isn’t ready (in my opinion):
- proofreading should be the last stage before publishing. If a manuscript needs a lot more work before it will be publishable (i.e. readable/marketable/enjoyable) it is a huge disservice to you to proofread your work, take your money, and send you on your way
- I take pride in helping aspiring authors put forward their best work
- proofreading something that is far from ready is WAY too much work. When the writing isn’t at its best, there are usually lots of errors. I shouldn’t work harder than you to polish YOUR art
